In 2020 Rolex released the 41mm Submariner which replaced all previous itenerations – full gold, two-tone and stainless steel. It marked a new generation for the Rolex Submariner – a new in-house developed movement, along with some small tweaks to its dial and bracelet.

The first Submariner was born in 1953, but the brand alegedly didn’t release it officially until the year 1954. As we have discussed many times, the Sub and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms were first two divers watches with the same features as we know today. During the times there were many itenerations which transformed several things in to modern standards while maintaining the iconic design.  Some of the most important modifications of the Submariner dive watch include the switch from acrylic glass to sapphire crystal, improved water resistance from 100 meters to 300 meters, brand’s patented Cerachrom material for higher resistance to colour fading.

Extending on the legacy of the Rolex Submariner no-date watch, the ref 124060 takes the already-robust proportions of the former 6-digit models from the 40mm category and enlarges them ever-so-slightly to a 41mm size, which made it the largest Submariner ever produced.

The lettering at 6 o’clock on the dial of the Submariner ref 124060 has received a small change. The “SWISS MADE” lettering is now accompanied by the iconic brand crown logo.

To keep the readability in dark or in deep water the Chromalight material was produced in-house by Rolex back in 2008 and since then has almost entirely replaced the brand’s former Super-LumiNova-treated dials.

The redesigned bracelet of the Rolex Submariner ref 124060 is slightly wider but remains largely unchanged. The Glidelock clasp as we know from 114060 remains pretty much the same and helps to adjust the bracelet without any tool for example in hot summer or when scuba diving.

The Rolex Submariner ref 124060 is equipped with the Calibre 3230, which replaces the former Calibre 3235 with a date-less version. This movement was first featured in this model and is said to be around 15% more efficient than its predecessor. It also boasts improved resistance to magnetic fields and shock and offers a longer power reserve of 70 hours compared to 48.
